(And Why Someone Else's Strategy Might Be Draining You)
If you've ever looked at another woman in business and thought:
"How are they posting every day?"
"How do they have the energy to launch another offer?"
"Why does networking seem so easy for them?"
"Am I just doing everything wrong?"
THIS IS FOR YOU, QUEEN!
Almost every client I've ever had (including myself!) has made the mistake of assuming that because something works for someone else, it should work for them too.
But that's not the case.
A wedding photographer, interior designer, health coach, therapist, photographer, and yoga instructor can all be incredibly successful and have gotten there through completely different paths.
I found Human Design when I was doing EVERYTHING under the sun trying to build my business. I mean, I was podcasting, doing webinars, networking, doing all the freebies and sales funnels, literally EVERYTHING. All while I was working a 9-5. Needless to say, I burnt out realllllly quickly.
Learning Human Design made me understand that I didn't need to do every single thing; I could just find what worked for me. It helps you understand your natural strengths, decision-making style, energy patterns, and potential blind spots.
There are 5 types in Human Design, each with their own gifts, shadows, and purpose: Manifestor, Projector, Generator, Manifesting Generator, and Reflector. Your type is not the end all, be all.
Similar to astrology, your type is kind of like your sun sign. It's the overarching theme, but the nuances within your chart make YOU.
If you don't know what your Human Design type is, you can get your free chart here!
MANIFESTOR: The Trailblazer
You make up around 8-9% of the population, but are a visionary! Manifestors are often the women introducing new ideas, challenging industry norms, and thinking about serving the masses. Freedom, autonomy, and the ability to do things your own way are incredibly important to you.
The Manifestor's strategy is to initiate. While other types are designed to respond, wait for recognition, or gain clarity over time, Manifestors feel an internal urge to get things moving. If you're a Manifestor, you're not supposed to wait for permission, you're here to get the ball rolling!
Strengths:
Independent and self-directed, thriving when given freedom to work in your own way.
Innovative and willing to explore ideas others haven't considered yet.
Natural dreamers! Not in a head-in-the-clouds way, but you have a vision of what could be possible and have the ambition to make it happen.
Able to create momentum and inspire movement in others.
How This Shows Up in Business:
You may feel drawn to carving your own path rather than following traditional business advice.
Once an idea clicks, you move quickly and bring it to life.
You may find yourself questioning industry norms or doing things differently than your peers.
Too much 1:1 work can feel restrictive. You need some type of macro-level work to create more impact!
Others may perceive you as intimidating, confident, or hard to read before they get to know you.
Challenges:
Balancing your natural urge to act with thoughtful communication. This helps reduce friction and builds trust with clients and collaborators.
You might've been made to feel that you're "too much". Too outspoken, impatient, independent, or ambitious. You may hold yourself back, wait for permission, or over-explain yourself.
The key thing for Manifestors to know is that you were not designed to 'fit' into the system, you were built to imagine a new system. You're not responsible for changing the world, but don't limit yourself -- your big imagination is a gift!
PROJECTOR: The Guide
You are about 20% of the population and are known for your ability to see what others can't.
You're probably highly perceptive, insightful, and naturally gifted at understanding people and patterns. But, you can struggle with energy levels and are prone to burn out faster than other types, making rest an important point of focus for any business model you choose.
The Projector's strategy is to wait for invitation. They are designed to be recognized for their gifts before being invited into deeper opportunities. This doesn't mean hiding until someone discovers you. It means allowing yourself to be seen so the right people can recognize the value you bring.
Strengths:
Highly perceptive and able to spot patterns others miss.
Naturally gifted at understanding people and what motivates them.
Strategic thinkers who can often identify the root of a problem quickly.
Receptive to other people's energy, making you highly empathetic.
How This Shows Up in Business:
Clients regularly tell you you're a fantastic listener or that they feel understood after a single conversation.
You often know exactly what's "off" about something, but find it difficult to explain why.
You naturally notice patterns, details, and opportunities that others overlook.
You can become so focused on your work that you don't realize you're approaching burnout until you literally crash.
One thing about Projectors is that they tend to spend their entire lives trying to keep up with Generator energy. They assume success requires constant output, endless networking, and working longer hours. In reality, your greatest value often comes from your insight, perspective, and ability to guide (not how much you can produce in a day).
GENERATOR: The Builder Bee
Generators make up the largest percentage of the population and are often referred to as the builders of society.
If Manifestors are the spark, Generators are the fire that keeps burning. These are often the women who genuinely enjoy creating, refining, and mastering what they do. They tend to have the most sustainable access to energy when they're doing work that excites them.
Whether you're a photographer, interior designer, florist, wedding planner, or creative entrepreneur, there's a good chance you find satisfaction in the work itself.
Generators are designed to respond to what life puts in front of them rather than forcing opportunities from the mind. The more aligned the work feels, the more energy they tend to have available for it.
Strengths:
Sustainable energy for work that genuinely excites them.
Deep mastery developed through repetition and experience.
Reliable growth built through consistency over time.
Strong work ethic when aligned with what they love.
Ability to create momentum once they're engaged.
How This Shows Up in Business:
You genuinely enjoy building, refining, and improving your craft.
You may lose track of time while working on projects you love.
Consistency feels easier when you're excited about what you're creating.
You often build trust through experience, results, and reliability.
You feel frustrated when you're stuck in work that drains you.
Challenges:
Overdoing or over-extending because others see you as someone with endless energy
Ending up burnt out after years of working in misaligned careers because you needed the consistency or stability
The biggest challenge for many Generators isn't a lack of energy, it's giving your energy to the wrong things. Frustration is often one of the clearest signs that something is no longer aligned, even if it looks good on paper. Pay attention to your sacral joy. When something excites you, it deserves your curiosity!
MANIFESTING GENERATOR: The Multi-Passionate Builder
Manifesting Generators are technically a sub-type of Generator but more commonly considered a separate type. They combine the initiating power of Manifestors with the steady energy of Generators and are fast movers who can juggle multiple projects.
While a Generator may move steadily toward one thing, a Manifesting Generator often takes a more winding path, picking up side hobbies or another stream of income generation.
Manifesting Generators are designed to respond to what excites them and then inform the people impacted by their decisions before taking action.
Strengths:
Fast-moving and highly adaptable.
Multi-passionate and creatively expansive.
Able to connect ideas across different industries and interests.
Tend to be a jack-of-all-trades because they've grown up having interests in many areas
Thrive when given room to evolve and experiment.
How This Shows Up in Business:
You probably have more ideas than time to execute them.
Your business has likely evolved several times and may continue to do so.
You need variety and can become bored doing the same thing forever.
New opportunities often lead to entirely different opportunities.
Your audience is often drawn to your enthusiasm and energy.
Challenges:
You may feel like you can't stick to anything or are indecisive.
In excitement or the heat of the moment, you may pressure yourself to think 10 steps ahead instead of one step at a time.
As a Manifesting Generator, you are often told you're scattered but you're actually designed to explore. Your key lesson is learning the difference between following genuine excitement and chasing every shiny object that appears. Your success comes from embracing your momentum while still building systems to keep projects on track.
REFLECTOR: The Mirror
Reflectors are rare (less than 1% of society!) and highly sensitive to their surroundings. Rather than having consistent internal energy like the other types, Reflectors are designed to mirror and reflect the health, energy, and dynamics of the people and environments around them.
Instead of relying on a fixed way of operating, Reflectors gain wisdom by experiencing many different perspectives. They're here to observe, sample life, and offer insight into what is and isn't working for the communities they belong to.
Reflectors are designed to give themselves time before making major decisions. Rather than forcing clarity in the moment, they often benefit from sitting with important choices over the course of a lunar cycle (about 28 days), allowing their perspective to naturally unfold (best done using their specific Authority).
Strengths:
Naturally perceptive and highly observant.
Able to see people, situations, and systems with remarkable objectivity.
Adaptable and able to connect with many different kinds of people.
Often recognize patterns and underlying dynamics that others overlook.
Thrive in supportive environments where they have the freedom to flow rather than force.
How This Shows Up in Business:
You naturally notice what others miss, making you excellent at giving feedback, consulting, coaching, or improving systems.
Your perspective can become one of your greatest assets because you see opportunities and blind spots from multiple angles.
Your business may evolve alongside your experiences rather than following one rigid path.
The people, clients, and environments you surround yourself with have a significant impact on your creativity, energy, and success.
Others are often drawn to your ability to bring clarity and help them see themselves more honestly.
Challenges:
You may struggle to know what's truly yours versus what you've absorbed from others.
You can feel pressure to make decisions quickly even though your clarity develops over time.
In unhealthy environments, you may feel drained, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself.
Because you naturally adapt, you may worry that you don't have a consistent identity or direction.
As a Reflector, you are often told you're too sensitive or inconsistent, but your sensitivity is actually one of your greatest strengths. Your gift is helping others see themselves more clearly while honoring your own need for the right people, the right environment, and the right timing. Your success comes from trusting your perspective instead of rushing to keep up with everyone else.
Bringing It All Together in Your Woman-Owned Business
Knowing your Human Design type helps you work with your natural energy instead of against it. Here are some practical tips for applying this knowledge:
Align your business model with your type. For example, Manifestors might focus on launching new products, while Projectors build consulting practices.
Communicate in ways that suit your type. Manifestors inform, Generators respond, Projectors wait for invitations, and Reflectors take time.
Create routines that support your energy. Generators benefit from steady schedules, while Reflectors need flexibility.
Build a team that complements your strengths. A Manifestor might partner with a Generator to maintain momentum, while a Projector might work with Reflectors for insight.
